Ambassadors

Ambassador applications have now re-opened, the first review period will begin June 1st. Until then, please feel free to join our GGS Crew Facebook group and our GGS Forum to connect with other sporty women.

Girls Gone Sporty is a movement and GGS Ambassadors are the driving force required to help spread the spirit of fun and adventure that Girls Gone Sporty stands for. We’re looking for women who embrace our tagline, “Live the sporty life!” Women who work hard, play hard, compete and eat, all with the intention of being their best, most positive selves.

Our Ambassadors form a network of sporty women who band together to focus on positive health. Studies have shown two things: 1) healthy living is contagious, and 2) healthy living is not just about weight loss. While we recognize that achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is important, weight and appearance are not cornerstones of our belief system, and we want to encourage women everywhere to embrace whole health and an attitude of adventure – body, mind, spirit and lifestyle – right where they are now

The Girls Gone Sporty Ambassador Program is limited and well-balanced so as to represent the general female population while creating a tight-knit community that can effectively support one another. We’re looking for women from all walks of life. We want walkers, runners, cyclists, climbers, lacrosse players, surfers, swimmers, slack liners, snowboarders... pretty much any sport or activity you can think of. We want women who share our values and outlook. We want women who are brand new to fitness and women who are fitness/sport professionals. The key for us is balance so that we can show our readers that we’re committed to embracing a wide audience.

What is Girls Gone Sporty?

Girls Gone Sporty is a movement. While currently its primary focus is its editorial-based website (http://www.girlsgonesporty.com), in time we want to host fitness retreats, sponsor teams, hold trainings and much, much more.
Girls Gone Sporty was founded on November 30, 2011 by husband and wife team, Lance and Laura Williams. Laura Williams has a Master’s degree in Exercise and Sport Science, eight years fitness management experience and three years of professional writing and editing experience. Lance Williams has an undergraduate degree in Exercise and Sport Science, six years personal training experience and four years experience as a professional web developer. Together they work with several freelance writers and interns to provide the content found on Girls Gone Sporty.

Why was Girls Gone Sporty founded?

Like many women, Laura struggled with body image throughout high school and college. While never suffering an outright eating disorder, she obsessed about her weight, exercised excessively and based her self-worth on what she saw in the mirror. As the years passed and as she continued to work her way through her education in Exercise and Sport Science, something finally clicked – the times she had been happiest and healthiest were the times when she was more focused on maintaining a fun and healthy lifestyle, rather than maintaining a particular weight. Plus, everything she learned in school only confirmed this approach: people can be healthy or unhealthy at any weight and size, so weight should not be the driving force behind activity. Girls Gone Sporty is designed to focus on encouraging activity, adventure, proper nutrition and all the positive aspects of sport: teamwork, drive, competition, encouragement and dedication to something outside of ourselves. That’s why Girls Gone Sporty was founded.

What are you looking for in your ambassadors?

We’re looking for women who embrace our tagline, “Live the sporty life!” Women who work hard, play hard, compete and eat, all with the intention of being their best, most positive selves.

What is the focus of the ambassador program?

Our focus is to develop a network of sporty women who band together to create a contagious spirit of adventure and enthusiasm for life to those around them. Studies have shown two things: 1) healthy living is contagious, and 2) healthy living is not just about weight loss. While we recognize that achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is important, weight and appearance are not cornerstones of our belief system, and we want to encourage women everywhere to embrace whole health and an attitude of adventure – body, mind, spirit and lifestyle – right where they are now.

How does the program work?

We want to work with our ambassadors to achieve success together. Our ambassador program will be limited and well-balanced because we want to get to know our ambassadors so that we can effectively support and encourage them. Individuals selected for the program will:

  • Be listed on our Ambassador page with an image, bio and links to their blog, website, social media pages, etc.
  • Be included as a member of our private Facebook page exclusive for Ambassadors as a way to connect and discuss business, life and... whatever!
  • The opportunity to be featured in a rotating ambassador slideshow on our homepage. This will link to your bio page.
  • The opportunity to participate in Ambassador blog roundups with links and credit to your website.
  • As we grow, we plan on providing opportunities to participate in events, receive gear and more.

What’s asked in return?

Not much! We only ask that you be committed to participating when and how you can. We want people who are truly invested in living the sporty life. Here are a few ways to participate:

  • Place the Girls Gone Sporty Ambassador Badge on your blog or website
  • Engage on the Girls Gone Sporty Ambassador Facebook page
  • Engage on the Girls Gone Sporty Forum
  • Tweet to @girlsgonesporty and/or use the hashtag #girlsgonesporty
  • Participate in our Ambassador blog roundups
  • Offer your expert advice when we request quotes for our editorial articles. These quotes will include links to your blog and/or website
  • Talk about us! Tell your family and friends to check out the site.

You said the program is exclusive, what does that mean?

We don’t want to become so overwhelmed with Ambassadors that we can’t serve them effectively. We don’t have a set number of Ambassadorships that we're aiming to fill, so the definition of exclusive will likely change as we grow. The main goal is to ensure that the women involved as Girls Gone Sporty Ambassadors truly embrace the goals of our organization.. and that’s a rare quality, indeed!

How do you choose your ambassadors?

There will be an application process.

Once an ambassador, always an ambassador?

Not necessarily. Ambassadorships will last one year. At that point, the relationship will be reviewed to determine whether or not it’s still a good fit. If not, new ambassador applications will be taken to fill the empty spots.
