Cute flip-flop ideas: Dressing Reef Sandals up or down

When the weather gets cold, all I want to do is wear tank tops and flip flops.

Cold, dreary weather is depressing, and there's something about warm-weather clothing that reminds you that summer will come back again. In deference to the cold months ahead, and in honor of the warm months behind, here are two ways to take a summertime favorite and dress it up or down. We used the Reef Mallory Scrunch as our go-to for these two cute flip-flop ideas.

Dressing flip-flops down

Let's be real... it's not that hard to dress flip-flops down. But instead of pairing them with your standard jeans and basic tee, opt for dark cut-off shorts and a graphic sweater. You could even pull this look off during the winter by layering bright tights under your shorts. A fringed cross-body bag, a tight bun and bold accessories like gold hoop earrings and a studded headband will help finish off the look. Keep your makeup subtle, playing up your eyes and focusing on a neutral lip.

Dressing flip-flops up

Dressing flip-flops up can be a little bit more of a challenge. Flip-flops are probably never going to be appropriate for a black-tie event, and it'd be tough to pull them off at work, but you can wear them on date night without complaint when you follow these tips:

Choose a flowing dress or skirt in a jewel-toned or dark color.

Look for skirts with a gauzy or sheer layer.Keep your jewelry simple, with a long pendent necklace or a thin bracelet, preferably in metallic tones.

Opt for a clutch bag in a color that contrasts your dress or skirt.

Wear your hair loose -- it doesn't matter if you have long or short hair, you just want it to be as natural and "beachy" as possible.

Play up your lips with a dark color, keeping your eye makeup more natural.

Finish your look by drawing attention to your feet -- a bold nail polish on your toes is the perfect way to shamelessly flaunt your flip-flops when dressing them up.
