Sporty, active women come in all shapes and sizes – from the 4’10” gymnast to the 6’3″ volleyball player to the rock-solid weight lifter and the wispy long-distance runner. It’s not just the very tall and very short athletes who struggle to find clothes that fit correctly, it’s the “fiercely real” athletes (as quoted by Tyra Banks on America’s Next Top Model) who struggle as well. And unfortunately, it’s taken years for designers to answer the call of women everywhere who proclaim, “I am not the ‘average’ – I am exceptional and I want clothing that is cute, comfortable and fits exceptionally well.” So, whether you’re a competitive athlete who happens to be plus size or you’re a plus size woman who is working hard to shed pounds, we wanted to help you find cute plus size workout clothes that are perfect for every fitness activity. Here are three brands that made the cut:
Lola Getts Active
Lola Getts Active clothing is flattering, on-trend and extremely well made. With bright colors, well-placed colorblocking and smart, but simple styling, you could build your entire workout wardrobe around their line (I especially love their new Shades of Gray collection – timely, no?). Have a cycling event coming up? Pair the Lola tee with the Lola Skinny capri. Hitting the gym for a group exercise class? Pair the Lola pant with the Lola Racerback Heading for a hike with your guy? You’ll look sexy and stylin’ wearing the Lola Babydoll, and if it gets cool, throw the Lola Jacket on top.
Bonus points? The fabric is thick and forgiving, but is made from high-performance materials with well-placed mesh to help keep you cool. Also, pants come in regular and long lengths to fit women of varying heights.
Taffy Activewear’s line of plus size workout clothing features a variety of tops, pants and jackets ranging in price from $30.00 to $65.00. The tops and jackets are simple, with well-placed seams and longer hemlines, making them perfect workout basics. I’m especially fond of Taffy’s “Work of Art” tanks and tees – the body positive image is something every woman should focus on.
Junonia takes the cake for having the widest selection of products geared to the broadest range of sports activities. Whether you’re looking for swimwear or snow gear, Junonia has you covered.
Bonus points? Junonia carries cute plus size workout clothing in up to size 6x, helping ensure that women of almost every size will feel comfortable and sexy while participating in all sorts of sports and activities.
Katie K. Active
When it comes to colors, cuts and prints, Katie K. is da bomb. As a smaller company (much like Taffy and Lola Getts), the number of styles they offer is somewhat limited, but what lacks in quantity is made up in quality. Bright colors, zebra stripes, and cute cuts (including draped cowl necks) abound. These styles are flattering for women of all shapes and sizes.
Always for Me
Always for Me has a wide selection of tops, bottoms, sports bras and swim suits. Their clothing has been featured on The Biggest Loser, and they don’t shy away from trying fun prints or interesting shapes. I’m especially fond of the Active Open Back Yoga Top and the Active Floral Racer Tank – the tank’s long length with a slight A-line at the hip is incredibly flattering.
Lane Bryant Livi Active
When you have a major brand like Lane Bryant release a plus size active apparel line, you know it’s going to be good. I’m absolutely in love with everything Livi Active has in their online store… especially their galaxy print leggings and inspirational graphic tees. With prices ranging from $25 to $70, the line is completely affordable, too.
Nordstrom Zella Plus Size
Nordstrom’s signature activewear line, Zella, is much like Lane Bryant’s – a wide selection with great prints, colors and variety. I’m especially fond of their Perfect Run tights featuring cooling mesh and light-reflective accents, as well as their Double Mesh Jacket – it’s cute enough to be worn while running errands, but technical enough to keep you cool and dry during a tough workout.
