GirlsGoneSporty.com was lucky enough to pick her brain for some advice on applying natural looks, how to master a quick morning makeup routine, her five must-have beauty items, and the frequently debated topic: should makeup be worn in the gym?
Colleen Kratofil (CK): How would you describe your personal makeup style?
Tara Loren (TL): For my daily routine, I’m pretty minimalist. I often have to be up and out of the house before the sun comes up and having a pared-down morning routine is essential for me. I am all about making sure my skin looks its best and making my eyes pop with some mascara. That way I always feel put together when arriving to a client’s house or set that day.
CK: Your work is known for having a fresh, clean and natural look. What are some basic techniques when applying natural-looking makeup?
TL: Working with good tools and products that you can build on! You won’t be able to achieve a completely natural look if you start with say, a heavy coverage foundation. Use build-able formulas to have better control over the finished look. Water-based formulas are great for this. When it comes to eyes and cheeks - blend, blend, blend! I sometimes use two or three extra brushes with no product on them just to blend out the makeup I’ve already applied to achieve the most natural look possible.
CK: Every sporty woman would love to speed up her morning makeup routine. What advice would you give to attain a flawless look in a short amount of time?
TL: Keep yourself organized! There’s no sense in spending precious morning minutes searching for your mascara or sunscreen because they live in different places. I suggest creating a one-stop shop that contains your favorite products. Arrange them on a beautiful decorative tray, antique mirror or even in stackable drawers under the sink, whatever suits your needs to keep it all in one place. One of my new go-to morning products is Dermalogica’s “Skin Perfect Primer”. It has a broad spectrum SPF 30, fills in large pores and fine lines and is so velvety smooth! It gives such a nice finish you may decide to forego your foundation altogether!
CK: A woman can carry an awful lot in her purse, but there’s no sense in lugging around all the wrong beauty products. What are five items a woman should never leave the house without?
TL: These five items are definite must-haves:
- A yummy smelling spray or deodorant - I’m loving the Weleda Citrus deodorant, its light lemony scent is a great mask if you have to run out immediately after your workout.
- A skin refreshing spray, such as Dermalogica’s Ultra Calming Mist. It reduces redness and any inflammation that may occur on your skin, plus I find it’s a great refresher to your makeup after a long day at work. A quick spritz and you can dab creases away.
- Always mascara - because it's an instant pick-me-up!
- Nars makes some really wonderful multi-use products. One in particular that I love is The “Multiple” stick, it comes in a variety of colors and it can be used on eyes/cheeks/lips! Perfect for on-the-go ladies!
- A cuticle cream or hand cream. This helps keep your manicure intact longer and prevents drying and cracking of the skin.
CK: What advice can you give GirlsGoneSporty.com readers when it comes to wearing makeup to the gym?
TL: If I had to choose one place a lady should never wear makeup, it would have to be the gym! I cannot get behind the idea of getting all made up and then sweating through it all. Not only do I feel like I will look worse when my workout is over than if I had not been wearing makeup to begin with, but I am also adding extra potential to cause breakouts. And, it’s more work to do when I’m finished to clean myself up. What a waste of your good beauty products! I say leave the glamour for the rest of your life!
CK: What would you recommend to those who feel like they can’t leave the house without even a hint of makeup?
TL: If you must, choose makeup-like products that come from skin care companies with tinted moisturizers. BB creams are good for this reason because they are lightweight and contain SPF, which is great if you are working out outdoors. You can definitely add some sheen to your lips; Rosebud Salve is always a favorite amongst my clients.
