Dr. Gayle CarsonEnergy to be an S.O.B. (It's not what you think!)

I have always been active. I first started as a dancer, then began swimming and water skiing, and then when gyms became popular (1985) I signed up and have been there ever since! I work out two hours a day, and that's what got me through breast cancer three times - chemo, radiation and 16 surgeries. But, I never got sick, felt tired or anything else. I even started a new business through this trial and also had my bunions done. I'm definitely an S.O.B. (Spunky Old Broad).

Staying motivated and challenged

GirlsGoneSporty (GGS): What is your motivation for staying active?

Dr. Gayle Carson (GC): The motivation to keep active is to keep moving.  During my three bouts of breast cancer, chemo, radiation, 16 surgeries, I never stopped working out.  I never got sick or felt tired.  I know it was mind and body that did it.

GGS: What sports or fitness accomplishments are you most proud of?

GC: The thing I'm most proud of is that even though I'm the oldest person in most of the classes I take, I never stop, so the "young ones" don't either.

GGS: How do you keep challenging yourself to improve?

GC: I keep challenging myself by going to the IDEA fitness conventions to keep up with the latest info as well as reading all the health and fitness mags I can.  I try new classes and machines, but I have to be careful - sometimes I push myself to my own detriment.

Dr. Gayle CarsonTools of the trade

GGS: What’s your favorite healthy food/dish?

GC: I love chicken just about any way it's made, but it has to be white meat.  I also like oatmeal or shredded wheat in the morning.

GGS: What's on your workout playlist?

GC: Nor sure what you mean by playlist but if it's music I'm at the mercy of the class instructor.  Personally, I like the upbeat 50's and 60's music.

GGS: What’s in your gym bag?

GC: In my gym bad is a towel, water, some hand weights and my workout routines.

Live the sporty life

GGS: What does the phrase “live the sporty life” mean to you?

GC: Live the sporty life means liking the outdoors, being active and not too concerned with the "glamour look."

Thank you for your wonderful commentary. I just hope it helps inspire people who are older to get moving. That's what it's all about. Dr. Oz says there are 3 things that help anti-aging. They're diet, exercise and having a purpose. That's why we can never stop!
