Television inspiration
I really wanted to be sporty as a kid, but I just didn't have the right coordination. As my dad would say, I would be lucky to run to the fridge! And it wasn't for a lack of trying!
in 2008, I was watching an episode of NBC's "The Biggest Loser" and saw the first female contestant win! I though to myself, hmmm... if these people can exercise and run like this, then why can't I? So, that led me down to my treadmill. I started on the "beginner" setting and the rest is history! I had found my new passion for running, and now I even blog about it!
Staying motivated and challenged
GirlsGoneSporty (GGS): What is your motivation for staying active?
Kim Yates (KY): My husband and son are my motivation for staying active! I just want to show my son especially that it is important to always be active!
GGS: What sports and fitness accomplishments are you most proud of?
KY: I'm most proud of running my first marathon in 2010. My sister-in-law and I weren't sure about it, but we challenged each other and did it! It was also great to see my hubby and son there cheering me on the whole way! Totally made it all worth it
GGS: How do you keep challenging yourself to improve?
KY: I set new goals for myself. A new race always keeps me motivated. Plus, I discovered biking recently! I was injured from running and it was the next best thing. I'd even like to try a duathlon sometime!
GGS: Are you currently training for a race or event? What's your workout schedule look like?
KY: I'm trying to get my legs healthy right now, but I'm hoping to be able to run my second marathon in October! Plus, I'll be doing my first Warrior Dash and a Color Me Rad 5k this August!! Can't wait!
Tools of the trade:
GGS: What’s your favorite healthy food or dish?
KY: I love salads! Any kind will do! I also love quinoa!
GGS: What's on your workout playlist?
KY: I listen to everything from rap and pop to country and Christian music! I love it all.
GGS: What’s in your gym bag?
KY: I have to have BodyGlide, my iPod, Garmin watch and all of my fave running gear!
Live the sporty life
GGS: What does the phrase “live the sporty life” mean to you?
KY: It means to me that you should be mindful of your health and fitness in everything you do! To be adventurous and to enjoy life for all it's worth!
